Printing Creativity with DeadRingers.ca

Have you ever liked a musician so much that you wanted to adorn yourself with their likeness?

Canadian specialty jewelry company Dead Ringers sells rock n’ roll skull rings of famous musicians. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Keith Richards: these luxury rings can be made to order in rose gold or sterling silver, with a variety of jewel insets. Each ring strongly resembles its muse, with Jim Morrison’s classic bone structure, Keith’s broken nose, Janis’s wide cheekbones and Jimi’s high forehead. Not to mention each ring bears the ghostly grin of each rock star – many orders are completed also with a stylized

Award-winning jewelry designer Saskia Dattner uses T-Splines software to employ a method which Dead Ringers refers to as Reverse Digital Forensic Sculpting.  Instead of using a skull to determine a person’s facial features, which is the case with CSI-evocative forensic sculpting, this process goes backwards. Dattner starts with several pictures of each rock star. Focusing on each rock artist’s facial features, teeth, and head shape, Dattner draws out cranium and facial structures until she is left with a digital skull outline. This outline is then developed using the CAD software to create a three-dimensional skull model.

Once Dattner is finished with the design, the files are printed on a Perfactory® 4 XL. These masters are used to create molds which are then cast in precious metal and engraved with the Deadringers.ca© logo and a unique serial number.

These rockin’ rings provide a bold statement and the 3D printed story behind the skulls is even cooler – a creative, musical twist on the gothic skull trend. Check them out below!
